Royal Cat Records in Guelph Celebrates Its First Anniversary On Record Store Day, Saturday April 18th

It’s been exactly one year since the Grand Opening of Guelph’s own “big little record shop,” Royal Cat Records, and the store is celebrating in style with a special event this Saturday April 18, coinciding with Record Store Day 2015, an international promotion that puts the spotlight on independent music retailers with special releases that are only available through local mom-and-pop stores.

“We are super-excited to be an official Record Store Day member this year,” said Bryan Munn, co-owner of Royal Cat Records, located in Downtown Guelph, just across the street from City Hall. “As record collectors and music fans ourselves, we have looked forward to this day every year since the event started in 2007. Now we are part of it and it’s like a dream come true. We always say vinyl is king at Royal Cat and it has never been truer than this year, when we will have many limited edition vinyl records prepared by some of our favourite artists available for sale.”
The store is scheduled to receive a selection of special records just in time for the event, and will also have a number of door-prizes, discounts, and sale items available, as well as the usual amount of classic new and used records. Vinyl records are the fastest growing part of the music industry, and Royal Cat Records has the largest selection in town.

The event is scheduled for Saturday April 18, 11am to 7pm.

Royal Cat Records is located inside Meow Boutique, 10 Carden Street (downstairs), in Downtown Guelph. Phone number is 519-821-7442.

About Record Store Day:

Record Store Day was conceived in 2007 at a gathering of independent record store owners and employees as a way to celebrate and spread the word about the unique culture surrounding nearly 1400 independently owned record stores in the US and thousands of similar stores internationally. There are Record Store Day participating stores on every continent except Antarctica.
This is a day for the people who make up the world of the record store—the staff, the customers, and the artists—to come together and celebrate the unique culture of a record store and the special role these independently owned stores play in their communities. Special vinyl and CD releases and various promotional products are made exclusively for the day and hundreds of artists in the United States and in various countries across the globe make special appearances and performances. Festivities include performances, cook-outs, body painting, meet & greets with artists, parades, djs spinning records and on and on. Metallica officially kicked off Record Store Day at Rasputin Music in San Francisco on April 19, 2008 and Record Store Day is now celebrated the third Saturday every April.

While there’s only one Record Store Day a year, the organization works throughout the year to create contests, special releases and promotions in order to spotlight these special stores on the other 364 days of the year. These include the Adapter Prize—which honors releases chosen as “The Best” by store staff and customers and Back To Black Friday which gives record stores exclusive releases as part of the attempt to redirect the focus of the biggest shopping day of the year to the desirable, special things to be found at local stores.

Record Store Day is currently managed by Michael Kurtz and Carrie Colliton, in coordination with Michael Bunnell and Eric Levin. Folks wanting to contact Record Store Day are encouraged to email us at press@recordstoreday.com

Record Store Day is managed by the Department of Record Stores and is organized in partnership with the Alliance of Independent Media Stores (AIMS), the Coalition of Independent Music Stores (CIMS) and celebrates the culture of independent record stores by playing host to in-store events/performances, signings and special product releases on a global scale.

Record Store Day takes place annually on the third Saturday of April.
